Even Vinny Magalhaes can?t believe a judge gave him a round in UFC 159 loss to Phil Davis

At UFC 159 on Saturday night, Phil Davis showed off the best striking of his career. The NCAA Division-I champion wrestler clearly dominated Vinny Magalhaes in all three rounds on the way to a unanimous decision win. However, one of the judges thought Magalhaes won one round, and the score was 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

It was a surprising score. It didn't take anything away from Davis' win, but it was odd enough that Magalhaes spoke up about it.

Davis and Magalhaes talked trash to each other for months before their bout. Magalhaes left the bad blood in the cage, and was able to give himself an honest assessment moments after the loss.

Padres beat up Vogelsong, finish sweep of Giants

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres are having a mercurial season.

Swept by the Giants in San Francisco last weekend, the Padres returned the favor by taking three games from the defending World Series champions at Petco Park.

Chase Headley, Nick Hundley and Alexi Amarista homered off Ryan Vogelsong to lead the Padres to a 6-4 victory Sunday. It was San Diego's first three-game sweep of the Giants since May 2010.

It was the fifth sweep the Padres have been involved in this season. After losing three games at home to Colorado two weekends ago, the Padres turned around and beat the Dodgers in three straight at Los Angeles.

"Can't explain it. Wish I could," manager Bud Black said. "Baseball's a game a lot of times that's unpredictable. You never know how a month's going to play out, or let alone a week. It's good to see we were able to come out today and get Vogelsong and Jason (Marquis) did his thing. Wish I could explain it."

The Padres remain in last place in the NL West but feel they're playing better. They hit better in this series than they did in San Francisco and got some nice defense.

"We're definitely playing a lot better baseball right now," said right fielder Chris Denorfia, who saved two runs with an impressive diving catch of Andres Torres' fly ball with runners on second and third and two outs in the eighth. "Our pitching's been outstanding the last week, maybe more. Our hitting's coming around. We've got Chase and Carlos (Quentin) back in the lineup so we're starting to be the team we knew we could be coming out of spring training."

Headley had three hits and Amarista scored three runs for the Padres, who've won four straight.

"It's great to see some guys hit some home runs today," Headley said.

The difference between the two series with the Giants was "not all that much, to be honest," Headley said. "We executed the little things, we're making plays defensively and got a couple of big hits. Our pitching did a nice job for us. Not a huge difference but enough to swing the series."

Pablo Sandoval had an RBI single among his career high-tying four hits for the Giants, who lost their season-high fifth straight game. They've lost eight of 12 following a 9-4 start.

"We haven't been playing so well," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We've been making mistakes that have hurt us in this little streak we are in. Guys could use a little break, too. It's a tough series. You're going to have them, as much as you don't like them. We're going to deal with it."

Buster Posey extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run homer to pull the Giants to 6-4 in the eighth. Sandoval was aboard after his third single.

San Diego's Jason Marquis (2-2) bounced back from a 7-1 loss to Milwaukee on Monday night in which he allowed a season-high seven runs, including first-inning homers to Ryan Braun and Yuniesky Betancourt.

Marquis pitched out of trouble after loading the bases in both the second and third innings. He allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings, walked four and struck out three.

Headley and Hundley each hit their second homer of the year while Amarista had his first. The Padres are the only team in the majors that doesn't have a player with at least three homers.

Headley homered to straightaway center field with two outs in the first.

After Brandon Crawford hit a sacrifice fly to tie it in the second, Hundley hit a two-run shot into the balcony on the second level of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left-field corner with two outs in the bottom of the inning to give San Diego a 3-1 lead. Amarista was aboard on a single.

With rookie Jedd Gyorko aboard on a leadoff double, Amarista hit a two-run homer in the fourth that landed on top of the new right field fence and bounced over the Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 Deck and into the seats. It was the first time the Padres benefited from the new fence, which was moved in 11 feet in an attempt to make the spacious downtown ballyard play fairer.

Opponents have hit four homers that wouldn't have gone out last year, including Posey's shot in the eighth that ticked off the glove of leaping right fielder Chris Denorfia. It was Posey's third.

Amarista walked leading off the sixth. Hundley singled to chase Vogelsong and the runners advanced on Marquis' sac bunt. Amarista scored on Posey's passed ball to make it 6-2.

The Giants loaded the bases with one out in the second before Brandon Crawford hit a sacrifice fly. Marquis struck out Vogelsong to get out of the jam.

San Francisco loaded the bases again with one out in the third before Marquis got Hunter Pence to hit into a double play.

Vogelsong (1-2) went five-plus, allowing six runs, five earned, and eight hits, struck out six and walked three.

"It's a battle from the start for Vogy," Bochy said. "He didn't have good stuff or command. It was just a case where he was battling without his good stuff. He made some mistakes. The ball was up quite a bit and they didn't miss `em. This usually is a ballpark that is a little bit forgiving. But the ball was carrying pretty good today. He got the ball up and they took advantage of it."

Huston Street pitched the ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

NOTES: San Diego swept the Giants for the first time since May 11-13, 2010, at San Francisco. Their last home sweep of the Giants was April 19-21, 2010. The Padres led the NL West for much of that season before staggering down the stretch and being eliminated from playoff contention on the last day by the Giants, who went on to win the World Series. ... Posey has nine RBIs and six extra-base hits during his hitting streak. ... The Padres travel to Chicago to open a four-game series against the Cubs on Monday. LHP Clayton Richard (0-2, 7.94) is scheduled to start against Jeff Samardzija (1-4, 3.03). ... The Giants open a series at Arizona on Monday night, with RHP Matt Cain (0-2, 6.59) scheduled to start against Ian Kennedy (1-2, 4.70).

New era of music which allures all the listeners? - Artipot

Music has many meanings. If you ask people to define music, it is quite possible that you won't get any two people giving the same answer. It is a contrivance to relax for some while a method to express thoughts for the others. It can be considered science as it is exact, specific and it requires clear-cut acoustics. It is a universal language in which the ideas are represented by symbols. Music can go on to have different meanings for different individuals but all and all it is a pure form of art.

Music has come across a lot of transformations, modifications to reach the form it is in today. From ancient ways of singular creation to the modern day electronic transfusion, music has seen it all. Music also has traditional connections. Different civilizations of the world are known to have characteristic music forms. From Carnatic music of southern India to Galician music of Spain, music has a vast variety regarding different traditions.

Music industry has changed a lot. In previous days listening to music was not a matter of pressing a few buttons neither was the creation and recording was cheap. There used to be huge gramophones with records of the size of a car tire. But now, due to the digitization of music, it has become immensely easy to record and distribute. Music has developed different genres like pop, rock, jazz etc. furthermore; every now and then a new genre comes into picture being a collaboration of existing ones. People now have access to the albums and records of different genres, countries, styles slating back to decades.

Music collaboration has gained huge popularity. It basically involves two or more musical forms, merged into one. Music goer's ever increasing hunger of rejuvenating fresh music gave birth to this fashion. People are connecting with this new trend instantly. Due to the development of internet and latest musical instruments, a song with catchy lyrics and attractive collaboration of different tunes gets clamant acclaim. When a song gets hit or is liked by public, soon its collaborations in different genres, known as remixes, start coming out. A smooth romantic song is converted into a high energy dance number by addition of beats and thumps.

Music collaboration is also getting acceptance because people with a particular taste of music can enjoy the amalgamation of different genres. Artists of different categories have come together and produced brilliant piece of music. Cloud collaboration has helped in bringing together various music producers across the world to combine their styles. This gives listeners an opportunity to develop a liking in other genres as well. People are trying very innovative things on this concept. With the help of social networking platforms and video sharing websites, they record their own version of a song in distinct genres and share them with the whole world. Remixes have given people a way to enjoy their favorite song on different occasions, in refreshing style and with unique approaches by different artists.

Lawmakers: Syria chemical weapons could menace US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons could be a greater threat after that nation's president leaves power and could end up targeting Americans at home, lawmakers warned Sunday as they considered a U.S. response that stops short of sending military forces there.

U.S. officials last week declared that the Syrian government probably had used chemical weapons twice in March, newly provocative acts in the 2-year civil war that has killed more than 70,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The U.S. assessment followed similar conclusions from Britain, France, Israel and Qatar ? key allies eager for a more aggressive response to the Syrian conflict.

President Barack Obama has said Syria's likely action ? or the transfer of President Bashar Assad's stockpiles to terrorists ? would cross a "red line" that would compel the United States to act.

Lawmakers sought to remind viewers on Sunday news programs of Obama's declaration while discouraging a U.S. foothold on the ground there.

"The president has laid down the line, and it can't be a dotted line. It can't be anything other than a red line," said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich. "And more than just Syria, Iran is paying attention to this. North Korea is paying attention to this."

Added Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.: "For America to sit on the sidelines and do nothing is a huge mistake."

Obama has insisted that any use of chemical weapons would change his thinking about the United States' role in Syria but said he didn't have enough information to order aggressive action.

"For the Syrian government to utilize chemical weapons on its people crosses a line that will change my calculus and how the United States approaches these issues," Obama said Friday.

But Rep. Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat, said Sunday the United States needs to consider those weapons. She said that when Assad leaves power, his opponents could have access to those weapons or they could fall into the hands of U.S. enemies.

"The day after Assad is the day that these chemical weapons could be at risk ... (and) we could be in bigger, even bigger trouble," she said.

Both sides of the civil war already accuse each other of using the chemical weapons.

The deadliest such alleged attack was in the Khan al-Assal village in the Aleppo province in March. The Syrian government called for the United Nations to investigate alleged chemical weapons use by rebels in the attack that killed 31 people.

Syria, however, has not allowed a team of experts into the country because it wants the investigation limited to the single Khan al-Assal incident, while U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged "immediate and unfettered access" for an expanded investigation.

One of Obama's chief antagonists on Syria, Sen. John McCain, R- Ariz., said the United States should go to Syria as part of an international force to safeguard the chemical weapons. But McCain added that he is not advocating sending ground troops to the nation.

"The worst thing we could do is put boots on the ground," McCain said.

His friend, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also said the United States could safeguard the weapons without a ground force. But he cautioned the weapons must be protected for fear that Americans could be targeted. Raising the specter of the lethal bomb at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, Graham said the next attack on U.S. soil could employ weapons that were once part of Assad's arsenal.

"The next bomb that goes off in America may not have nails and glass," he said.

Rogers and Schakowsky spoke to ABC's "This Week." Chambliss and Graham were interviewed on CBS's "Face the Nation." McCain appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Insert Coin: Snapzoom gives Kickstarters a crack at its smartphone scope adapter (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Snapzoom gives Kickstarters a crack at its smartphone scope adapter

Snapzoom stole a lot of hearts at Engadget Expand, but it didn't quite steal enough votes to win our Insert Coin contest. Now you can exact some justice, as the smartphone adapter for binoculars, telescopes and microscopes is up for grabs on Kickstarter to let you zoom in on the moon, bacteria or whatever else you can think of. So far it's vacuumed up $15,000 toward its $55,000 goal, and while the early bird offer is sold out, backers can still grab one starting at $60, a hefty discount from the final $80 retail price. For $90, you'll even get a basic 10x25 compact Bushnell travel binocular tossed in, so if you want to see what made our Insert Coin judges go zoom-crazy, hit the source or video after the jump.

Unique sulfur isotopes in plume lavas reveal deep mantle storage of archean crust

Apr. 24, 2013 ? An international team of researchers, led by scientists at Boston University?s Department of Earth and Environment, has found evidence that material contained in young oceanic lava flows originated at the Earth?s surface in the Archean (>2.45 billions years ago). The new finding helps constrain the timing of the initiation of plate tectonics, the origin of some of the chemical heterogeneity in the Earth?s mantle, and may shed light on how the chaotically convecting mantle could preserve such material for so long. The study appears in the April 25 issue of the journal Nature.

Tectonic plates at the Earth?s surface move around and collide at areas called subduction zones. In these areas, one plate is forced beneath the other and is transported into the Earth?s mantle. It has long been suggested that this subducted material must be re-erupted at a later time. However, the residence time of the subducted material in the mantle is uncertain and convincing evidence of its return to the surface has been lacking.

Sulfur isotopes provide the key to the authors? discovery. According to the researchers, because mass-independently fractionated (MIF) sulfur isotope signatures were generated exclusively through atmospheric photochemical reactions until about 2.5 billion years ago, material containing such isotope signatures must have originated at the Earth?s surface in the Archean. In the new study, the researchers found MIF sulfur-isotope signatures in olivine-hosted sulfides from relatively young (20-million-year-old) ocean island basalts (OIB) from Mangaia, Cook Islands (Polynesia), providing evidence that material once at the Earth?s surface has been recycled through the mantle and re-erupted at a young ocean island.

?The discovery of MIF-S isotope in these young oceanic lavas suggests that sulfur?likely derived from the hydrothermally-altered oceanic crust?was subducted into the mantle more than 2.5 billion years ago and recycled into the mantle source of the Mangaia lavas,? says Rita Cabral, the study?s primary author and a graduate student in BU?s Department of Earth and Environment.

The data also complement evidence for sulfur recycling of ancient sedimentary materials to the subcontinental lithospheric mantle previously identified in diamond inclusions.

NASA now footing entire bill for plutonium production

NASA

The Voyager 1 spacecraft is among NASA's fleet powered by Plutonium-236.

By Mike Wall
Space.com

NASA will now foot the entire bill for the United States' production of plutonium-238 spacecraft fuel, which recently started up again for the first time in a quarter-century.

The space agency had been splitting costs for the reboot with the U.S. Department of Energy, which actually produces plutonium-238. But NASA is the only projected user of the stuff, so the arrangement changed in the White House's federal budget request for 2014, which was unveiled earlier this month.

"Since the (Obama) administration has a 'user pays' philosophy, we are now in a position to pay for basically the entire enterprise, including the base infrastructure at DOE," NASA Chief Financial Officer Beth Robinson said in an April 10 press conference. "We'll be partnering with DOE in the next couple of months to figure out how to best do this, and how to streamline the program to produce plutonium-238."?[Nuclear Generators Power NASA Probes (Infographic)]

Plutonium-238 is not a bomb-making material, but it is radioactive, emitting heat that can be converted to electricity using a device called a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. For decades, RTGs have powered NASA probes to destinations in deep space, where sunlight is too weak and dispersed to be of much use to a robot.

For example, the agency's twin Voyager spacecraft, which are knocking on the door of interstellar space, are both RTG-powered. So is the Mars rover Curiosity, whose observations recently helped scientists determine that the Red Planet could once have supported microbial life.

The DOE stopped producing Pu-238 in 1988, after which NASA began sourcing the fuel from Russia. But the agency received its last Russian shipment in 2010, and supplies have been dwindling ever since, worrying many scientists and space-exploration advocates.

So NASA and the DOE have been working together on a Pu-238 restart, which officials from both agencies have estimated will cost between $75 million and $90 million over five years.

This effort has made significant progress. NASA officials announced last month that researchers at the DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee had irradiated targets of neptunium-237 with neutrons, successfully generating small amounts of plutonium-238 ? the nation's first in 25 years.

Scaling up from these early test activities shouldn't be too much of a chore, officials said.

"By optimizing the production process, it is estimated that 1.5 to 2 kilograms (3.3 to 4.4 pounds) per year will be produced by 2018. This amount will be enough to meet NASA's projected needs for future planetary missions. The Science budget request fully funds this requirement," NASA officials wrote in the agency's 650-page explanation of its 2014 budget request.

"For the first time, NASA?s request also includes $50 million to support the radioisotope power system development infrastructure through full-cost recovery mechanisms at the Department of Energy," they added.

EMCC Helps Raise Money for American Cancer Society - WABI TV5

Bangor - Tasty treats are helping cook up a cure in Bangor. Students and faculty at Eastern Maine Community College enjoyed a chocolate tasting event to benefit the Penobscot County Relay for Life. The money collected Wednesday benefits the school's relay team. They're participating in the Relay for Life event in late May.

For an entire night they will take turns walking the track at the University of Maine in Orono. The fund raiser helps raise money for cancer treatment and research. The organizer of Wednesday's chocolate tasting says the cause is close to home.

"My mom had cancer so it was more of a close to home type deal so I said I'm going to put my all in that," said organizer Tiffany Carr. When asked about the most challenging chocolate treat to bake, she said, "Challenging thing to make? Peanut butter balls."

"It is very rich and creamy," exclaimed one exuberant student, as he struggled to speak while happily chewing.

Tiffany tells us she hopes the event raised about $200 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

Revenues generated by franchisees are not included in revenues on the consolidated statements of income; however, we generate royalty revenue and advertising fees based on franchisee revenues, where applicable. We believe including franchisee comparable restaurants revenues provides investors information regarding brand performance that is relevant to current operations and may impact future restaurant development.

? ?

2

System-wide comparable restaurant sales are derived from sales generated by company-owned Chili's and Maggiano's restaurants in addition to the sales generated at franchisee operated restaurants.

Quarterly Operating Performance?

CHILI'S?third quarter?company sales of?$632.6 million?represent a?0.7 percent?decrease from?$637.0 million?in the prior year period driven by traffic declines. As compared to the prior year,?Chili's?operating margin improved due to lower cost of sales. Cost of sales as a percentage of company sales was favorably impacted by mix changes related to shrimp, ribs and fajita meat coupled with increased menu pricing, partially offset by unfavorable commodity pricing primarily related to beef, pork and chicken wings. Restaurant labor was positively impacted by improved labor productivity from the installation of new kitchen equipment and lower manager bonuses, partially offset by increased health insurance claims and sales deleverage.

MAGGIANO'S?third quarter?company sales of?$92.1 million?increased?0.2 percent?primarily driven by menu pricing. As compared to the prior year, Maggiano's operating margin improved primarily due to lower cost of sales. Cost of sales was favorably impacted by decreased commodity usage from efforts to reduce waste, menu item changes, favorable commodity pricing on seafood as well as increased menu pricing. Restaurant operating margin was negatively impacted by higher workers' compensation insurance expenses and increased health insurance claims, partially offset by lower repair and maintenance expense and utilities expense.

FRANCHISE AND OTHER revenues totaled?$18.1 million?for the quarter, an increase of?38.2?percent compared to?$13.1 million?in the prior year. The increase was driven primarily by a?$5.2 million?reduction in revenues in the prior year resulting from a change in the estimate of gift card breakage. International franchise comparable restaurant sales increased?5.1 percent?while domestic franchise comparable restaurant sales decreased?0.3 percent.Brinker?franchisees generated approximately?$424 million?in sales1?for the?third quarter?of fiscal?2013.

1

Royalty revenues are recognized based on the sales generated and reported to the company by franchisees.

Other

Depreciation and amortization expense increased?$2.3 million?for the quarter primarily due to investments in existing restaurants and asset replacements, partially offset by an increase in fully depreciated assets.

General and administrative expense decreased?$6.0 million?primarily due to lower performance-based compensation.

Interest expense increased?$0.6 million?for the quarter as a result of higher borrowing balances.

Excluding the impact of special items, the effective income tax rate remained flat at 28.9 percent in the current quarter compared to the same quarter last year as the tax impact of increased earnings in the current quarter was offset by a credit related to the prior year. On a GAAP basis, the effective income tax rate increased to?28.7?percent in the current quarter as compared to?28.2?percent in the same quarter last year due to increased earnings in the current quarter and the tax benefit resulting from higher net charges related to special items in the prior year, partially offset by a credit related to the prior year.

Non-GAAP Reconciliation

Brinker?believes excluding special items from its financial results provides investors with a clearer perspective of the company's ongoing operating performance and a more relevant comparison to prior period results.
